reciprocation
Giving back equally
Reciprocation is the act of returning in kind—responding to an action with a corresponding one.
If someone does you a favor, reciprocation means doing one back.
The word carries a sense of balance or exchange: She appreciated the gesture but felt no obligation toward reciprocation.
In mechanical contexts, reciprocation describes back-and-forth motion, as in a piston.
