uptown

Toward the brownstones

Uptown refers to the northern or residential part of a city, as opposed to downtown's commercial center.

The distinction originated in Manhattan, where uptown meant toward the higher-numbered streets.

As an adverb or adjective, it describes direction or location: heading uptown, an uptown apartment.

Uptown often connotes wealth or sophistication: uptown tastes, moving on up to the uptown side.
