ghettoizing

Confining to margins

Ghettoizing is confining a group or category to a restricted space or status, either literally or figuratively.

The term derives from ghettos—urban areas where minorities were historically forced to live.

Now it often describes marginalization more broadly: The industry keeps ghettoizing women's sports to off-peak time slots.

To ghettoize something is to treat it as lesser, separate, or unworthy of mainstream attention.
