ghetto bird

Overhead law enforcement

A ghetto bird is slang for a police helicopter, particularly one circling low over urban neighborhoods with its searchlight on.

The term originated in Black American vernacular and was popularized by Ice Cube's 1993 song: The ghetto bird circled the block three times before moving on.

It captures the surveillance presence felt in heavily policed areas.
