ghettoized
Pushed into margins
Ghettoized describes something that has been isolated, segregated, or confined to a marginalized position.
The term comes from ghetto, historically a restricted urban area where minority groups were forced to live.
Now it applies broadly: a subject can be ghettoized within academia, meaning relegated to low status; a genre can be ghettoized by critics.
Science fiction was long ghettoized as unserious literature.
The word implies both physical or social separation and diminished standing.
