gaffing

Hooking large catch

Gaffing is using a gaff—a large hook on a pole—to land fish too heavy to lift by line alone: After a twenty-minute fight, they started gaffing the tuna.

In theater and film, gaffing refers to the work of a gaffer, the chief electrician who manages lighting equipment.

The term also covers the act of rigging games or cheating, from the sense of gaff as a trick device.
