catch and release

Humane angling practice

Catch and release is a fishing practice where anglers return fish to the water after catching them, typically to conserve populations.

The phrase extends to any situation where something is temporarily captured then let go: The police operated on a catch-and-release basis with minor offenders.

In dating, it describes pursuing someone only to lose interest once they're "caught."
