cable cars
Aerial rail vehicles
Cable cars are vehicles pulled along by a continuously moving cable, typically used for transportation up steep inclines or across difficult terrain.
San Francisco's iconic streetcars grip an underground cable; aerial cable cars (also called gondolas or tramways) hang suspended from overhead cables: We took the cable car to the mountain summit.
The term covers both street-level and aerial systems.
