maglev trains
Hovering rail vehicles
Maglev trains use magnetic levitation to float above the track, eliminating friction between wheels and rails.
This allows for higher speeds and smoother rides than conventional rail.
The technology requires specialized infrastructure—electromagnets in both track and train work together to lift and propel the vehicle: Japan's maglev train set a speed record of 374 mph.
