front bench
Parliamentary senior positions
Front bench refers to the seats in the British Parliament occupied by senior government ministers and opposition leaders, positioned at the front of the chamber facing each other.
By extension, it designates the senior politicians themselves: The front bench was united against the proposal.
Those not in leadership sit on the back benches.
