woolsack

Lords' traditional perch

A woolsack is a large bag stuffed with wool.

In the British House of Lords, the Woolsack is the seat of the Lord Chancellor—traditionally a large red cushion stuffed with wool, symbolizing England's historic wool trade.

By extension, the woolsack refers to the office of Lord Chancellor itself: He rose to the woolsack in 1987.
