freeclimbing

Ascending without ropes

Freeclimbing is a style of rock climbing where the climber ascends using only their hands, feet, and body strength to make progress up the rock face.

Ropes and gear are used solely for safety in case of a fall, not as aids for upward movement.

This distinguishes it from aid climbing, where climbers use equipment to help them ascend.

She spent years freeclimbing routes in Yosemite before attempting El Capitan.
