freeclimb

Scale without ropes

To freeclimb is to scale a rock face or cliff using only hands and feet on natural holds, without aid from ropes, pitons, or other equipment for upward progress.

Safety gear may be present to arrest falls but not to assist the climb itself.

The term distinguishes this pure style from aid climbing: She freeclimbed the entire route without once weighting the rope.
