free agency
Unsigned player status
Free agency is the state of being unbound by contract, especially in professional sports, where a player whose contract has expired can negotiate with any team: He'll hit free agency this winter.
The term extends to anyone unattached and free to choose: After the breakup, she's enjoying her free agency.
In philosophy, free agency is the capacity to make choices unconstrained by external forces.
