team option
Roster control provision
A team option is a contractual clause in professional sports that gives the team—not the player—the right to extend or terminate a contract for an additional period.
If the team exercises the option, the player remains under contract at predetermined terms; if declined, the player becomes a free agent.
The team picked up his option for next season.
Compare with player option, where the athlete holds that power.
