center fielder

Deep middle defender

A center fielder is the defensive player in baseball or softball who covers the middle portion of the outfield.

The position demands speed and range, as center fielders back up plays to left and right field and typically cover the most ground.

They often serve as the outfield captain, calling off other fielders on fly balls: The center fielder waved off the left fielder and made the catch.
