boundary stones
Land division markers
Boundary stones are markers placed to indicate property lines, territorial borders, or jurisdictional limits.
Historically, these were carved or engraved stones set at the edges of land parcels, often considered sacred or legally protected—moving one was a serious offense in many ancient cultures.
Today the term extends to any permanent markers defining boundaries: The surveyors located the original boundary stones from the 1850s.
