foley

Dubbed sound effects

Foley is the art of creating sound effects for film and television by recording everyday objects and movements in sync with the action on screen.

A foley artist might crinkle cellophane for fire, clap coconut shells for hoofbeats, or walk on gravel to match an actor's footsteps: The foley work in that film was incredible—every punch sounded brutal.

Named for sound pioneer Jack Foley, the term has become generic in film production. (Capitalized Foley is a surname.)
