flying saucers
Extraterrestrial disc vessels
Flying saucers are disc-shaped aircraft supposedly piloted by extraterrestrials, reported in alleged sightings since the mid-twentieth century.
The term comes from early descriptions of unidentified objects moving like saucers skipping across water.
Flying saucer now sounds dated; UFO and UAP have largely replaced it in serious discussion, though it persists in popular culture: The movie featured flying saucers landing on the White House lawn.
