Swamp gas is methane and other gases produced by decaying organic matter in wetlands.
The term gained notoriety from official explanations of UFO sightings, claiming witnesses had merely seen ignited swamp gas.
This explanation became so widely mocked that swamp gas now suggests any implausible official excuse: They'll probably blame it on swamp gas.
