Death rays are hypothetical beams of directed energy capable of killing people or destroying objects at a distance.
The concept flourished in early science fiction and wartime rumors: The mad scientist aimed his death ray at the city.
While no true death ray exists, the term now applies loosely to laser weapons and other directed-energy technology in development.
