heat ray
Scorching energy weapon
A heat ray is a beam of concentrated thermal energy used as a weapon, capable of burning or incinerating targets at a distance.
The concept originates in science fiction—most famously the Martian weapons in H.G.
Wells's *The War of the Worlds*—but has since inspired real military research into directed-energy weapons.
The invaders swept the countryside with their heat rays.
