close encounter

Almost a collision

Close encounter is an experience of proximity to something extraordinary, especially a UFO or extraterrestrial being.

The phrase gained currency from J.

Allen Hynek's classification system for UFO reports, popularized by the 1977 film *Close Encounters of the Third Kind*.

More broadly, a close encounter is any unexpected brush with something remarkable or dangerous: I had a close encounter with a bear on the trail.

The phrase often carries a note of wonder or near-miss.
