little green men
Imagined Martian visitors
Little green men is a stock image for space aliens, evoking mid-twentieth-century science fiction and its cartoonish depictions of extraterrestrials: Do you believe in little green men?
The phrase often carries a dismissive or humorous tone, suggesting the speaker finds alien theories implausible.
In military and political contexts, little green men refers to unidentified soldiers in unmarked uniforms—troops whose government denies deploying them: Little green men appeared in Crimea before Russia acknowledged its forces were there.
