fiords

Norway's coastal fingers

Fiords is an alternate spelling of fjords—long, narrow inlets of sea between steep cliffs, carved by glacial erosion.

Norway's coastline is famous for them.

The spelling with *i* reflects older English rendering of the Norwegian word; *fjord* now dominates.

The cruise ship navigated the fiords of Scandinavia.
