exhaust valve

Spent gas exit

An exhaust valve is a valve in an internal combustion engine that opens to release burned gases from the cylinder after combustion.

The exhaust valve works in sequence with the intake valve—intake admits fuel and air, exhaust expels waste.

The term extends to any valve that vents gases or fluids from a system: The pressure relief exhaust valve prevented the tank from rupturing.
