dieselization

Switching fuel types

Dieselization is the conversion of equipment—especially railroad locomotives—from steam or other power sources to diesel engines.

The term emerged during the mid-twentieth century as railroads worldwide replaced steam locomotives with diesel units: The dieselization of American railroads was largely complete by 1960.

The process extends to other transportation systems and industrial machinery.
