royal edict
Monarch's official order
A royal edict is an official decree or proclamation issued by a monarch, carrying the force of law within their realm.
Unlike legislation that passes through parliamentary bodies, a royal edict derives authority directly from sovereign power.
The royal edict banned all public gatherings during the plague.
The term now often appears in historical contexts or figuratively to describe any authoritative pronouncement delivered without consultation: My father's dinner rules came down like royal edicts.
