underground cities
Settlements beneath earth
Underground cities are subterranean complexes where people live, work, or shelter, either carved from rock or built beneath existing structures.
Some are ancient—Cappadocia's cave dwellings housed thousands—while others are modern: Montreal's underground city connects shops and offices beneath the streets.
The term also describes tunnel networks used for refuge during war or persecution.
