autoharp

Bar-dampened string instrument

An autoharp is a stringed instrument with a series of chord bars that, when pressed, dampen all strings except those needed for a particular chord.

The player strums across the strings while pressing buttons to produce accompaniment.

Popular in folk and country music, it requires less technical skill than guitar or piano: She accompanied the children's songs on the autoharp.
