companion planting

Mutually beneficial crops

Companion planting is the practice of growing certain plants near each other for mutual benefit.

Some combinations deter pests, improve pollination, or enhance growth—basil planted near tomatoes, marigolds among vegetables.

The practice draws on folk tradition and some scientific evidence: I use companion planting to keep aphids off my roses.
