draft dodgers
Military service avoiders
Draft dodgers are people who evade compulsory military service.
The term gained prominence during the Vietnam War, when many young American men fled to Canada or used deferments to avoid conscription.
His uncle was a draft dodger who never came back from Toronto.
The label carries either condemnation or sympathy depending on one's politics—cowardice to some, principled resistance to others.
