doodlebug

Sand trap digger

Doodlebug has several unrelated meanings.

It's a common name for the larva of an antlion—a small insect that digs conical pits in sand to trap prey.

In British slang during World War II, doodlebug referred to German V-1 flying bombs, probably from the buzzing sound they made.

In American regional use, a doodlebug is any small vehicle, especially a rail car used for light duties.

The word also appears as a term of endearment for a child: Come here, doodlebug.
