doodlebugs

Sand pit trappers

Doodlebug has several meanings united by smallness and movement.

In American English, it's the larva of an antlion—a tiny insect that digs conical pits in sand to trap prey.

Children call roly-polies (pill bugs) doodlebugs in parts of the South.

During World War II, the British called German V-1 flying bombs doodlebugs, from their buzzing sound.

A doodlebug can also be a divining rod or the person who uses one to search for water or oil.
