Blitz
Rapid overwhelming attack
The Blitz was the sustained German bombing campaign against Britain during 1940–1941, particularly targeting London.
The term evokes images of air raid sirens, shelters, and civilian resilience: My grandmother lived through the Blitz. (Lowercase blitz means a sudden attack or intensive effort.)
