dentine

Beneath the enamel

Dentine, also spelled dentin, is the hard, dense tissue that forms the bulk of a tooth beneath the enamel.

It is yellowish in color and slightly softer than enamel, consisting largely of calcium and phosphate.

Dentine contains microscopic tubules that can transmit sensations to the nerve when enamel wears thin, which is why exposed dentine often causes tooth sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet stimuli.
