tubules

Microscopic hollow channels

Tubules are tiny tubes, especially the microscopic ones found throughout biological systems.

The kidneys contain tubules that filter waste from blood; plant roots absorb water through tubules; and countless other structures in living organisms depend on these minuscule channels.

The word is essentially a diminutive of tube, used when the structures are too small to see with the naked eye.

The renal tubules were damaged by the infection.
