dehull

Strip outer covering

To dehull is to remove the hull—the outer covering—from seeds, grains, or nuts.

Rice, barley, and sunflower seeds are commonly dehulled before sale or further processing.

The process may be done mechanically or by hand: We dehulled the oats before grinding them into flour.
