debutantes

Young women introduced

Debutantes are young women making their formal entrance into society, traditionally at a ball or similar event marking their eligibility for marriage.

The practice originated among aristocratic families and persists in some social circles: The debutantes curtsied before the assembly.

By extension, any newcomer to a field might be called a debutante, though the word retains its feminine, upper-class associations.
