cytokine storm
Deadly inflammatory cascade
A cytokine storm is a dangerous overreaction of the immune system in which the body releases excessive amounts of inflammatory proteins called cytokines.
Rather than fighting infection in a controlled way, this flood of cytokines triggers widespread inflammation that can damage organs and lead to death.
Cytokine storms gained public attention during the COVID-19 pandemic as a major cause of severe illness, though they occur in other conditions including sepsis and some cancer treatments.
The patient's rapid decline was caused by a cytokine storm.
