side effect

Secondary drug reaction

A side effect is a secondary consequence of something, usually unintended.

The term appears most often in medicine, where a drug's side effects are outcomes beyond its intended therapeutic purpose: Drowsiness is a common side effect of antihistamines.

In programming, a side effect is any change a function makes outside its own scope—modifying a variable, writing to a file.

The phrase implies the primary effect was the goal; the side effect came along for the ride.
