cup bearer
Monarch's drink servant
A cupbearer is a person who serves drinks, especially wine, to a ruler or noble.
In ancient courts, the cupbearer held a position of great trust—tasting drinks to detect poison before the monarch drank.
The role appears frequently in biblical and classical texts: Nehemiah was cupbearer to the Persian king.
The term survives mainly in historical contexts.
