spark-gap

Arc-jumping void

A spark-gap is the space between two electrodes across which an electrical spark can jump.

In early radio transmitters, spark-gaps generated the oscillating current that produced radio waves.

The term also applies to protective devices that discharge dangerous voltage surges: The spark-gap prevents lightning damage to the equipment.
