connecting rod

Crankshaft-piston bridge

A connecting rod is the metal bar in an engine that links the piston to the crankshaft, converting the piston's up-and-down motion into rotational force.

Also called a con rod.

The term extends to similar linking components in other machinery: The connecting rod snapped and destroyed the engine block.
