whooping crane

Tall white bird

The whooping crane is a large white North American bird, the tallest in the continent, named for its distinctive trumpeting call.

Once nearly extinct—down to about fifteen birds in the 1940s—it became a symbol of conservation efforts.

The species remains endangered: We spotted a whooping crane on the migration route.
