county seat

Courthouse's home town

A county seat is the town or city that serves as the administrative center of a county, where the courthouse and local government offices are located.

In American geography, the county seat is often but not always the largest or most central town in the county: We drove to the county seat to file the deed.

The British equivalent is county town.
