type II error

Missed true effect

A type II error is a false negative—failing to detect something that is actually there.

In statistics, it means accepting a null hypothesis when it should be rejected: concluding there's no effect when one exists.

The study's small sample size increased the risk of a type II error.

Also called a beta error.

Compare type I error, the false positive.
