chi-square

Goodness-of-fit measure

Chi-square is a statistical measure comparing observed frequencies to expected frequencies.

In a chi-square test, researchers determine whether differences between groups are statistically significant or likely due to chance: A chi-square test showed the relationship between smoking and lung cancer was not random.

The name comes from the Greek letter chi (χ), which represents the statistic in formulas.
