asymptotic

Endlessly approaching, never arriving

Asymptotic describes something that approaches a limit but never quite reaches it.

In mathematics, a curve is asymptotic to a line if it draws infinitely closer without touching: The graph approaches zero asymptotically.

The word extends to any process of diminishing returns or endless approach: Progress became asymptotic—each improvement smaller than the last.
