compulsions

Can't-help-it behaviors

Compulsions are urges to perform certain actions, especially repetitive behaviors driven by anxiety or obsessive thoughts.

In clinical contexts, compulsions pair with obsessions in OCD—the obsessive fear of contamination produces compulsive handwashing, for instance.

More loosely, a compulsion is any strong, hard-to-resist impulse: She felt a compulsion to check her phone every few minutes.
